Practical Guided Solutions
Consultations are available to anyone who has concerns about their cat’s behaviour, or who would like professional advice on caring for their cat. We address problems with inappropriate toileting or spraying, aggression, fear or anxiety, over grooming, stress, diet and nutrition, scratching, excess vocalisation and multi-cat issues.
The consultations are most effective when held in your home. This allows me to best assess the various factors involved in causing the behaviours you are concerned about. During a consultation I will explore the possible causes for the problem and identify the most effective treatment options as they apply individually to you and your pet. An explanation of your cat’s behaviour will be provided, and you will be left with a treatment plan that is both practical and effective.
When Should I Book a Consultation?
Working with a behaviour consultant from the very beginning of a problem will address any issues before they have a chance to form into habits, and potentially solve any problems faster. Our consultations are intended as a complimentary service to any advice or treatments recommended by your veterinarian, therefore a health check at your cat’s regular clinic is highly recommended before booking a consultation with us so that any medical causes that may be affecting your cat’s behaviour can be addressed.
Our standard consultation takes approximately 1-2 hours and includes 30 days of ongoing email support. Travel within Dunedin/Mosgiel also included.
Please be aware that I may ask to see different areas in your home that your cat has access to, or I may request to spend one-on-one time with your cat (you are always welcome to stay present for this). It is my aim to provide you with all the information and techniques necessary to resolve your pet’s behavioural problem. Often this initial consultation and email support is all that is required, however at the end of the session additional time may be added at standard rates (at your request). Follow-up sessions are optional, but highly recommended and serve to review the treatment plan and ensure continuous progress.
Alternatively, you may wish to try our comprehensive consultation package. This package includes:
- The initial consultation
- A written report summarising my assessment of your pet’s behaviour, and the recommendations that I make during the consultation.
- 1x 45 minute follow-up session
- 1x 30 minute follow-up session
- Ongoing email support for 90 days to ensure the treatment program is progressing as effectively as possible.
- Correspondence with your vet (if the case was referred).
The cost of the premium consultation package is $299.
Travel within Central Dunedin/Mosgiel is included.
Phone / Skype / Email Consultations
Remote consultations are available to clients outside of my usual service area where completing an in-home consultation would not be practical. An initial overview of your pets behaviour is required (at no charge) to determine if your case will be suitable for this service. Please contact me for details.
Before the Consultation
To fully gain a comprehensive understanding of your cat’s behaviour, you will be requested to complete a questionnaire and submit it for review at least 72 hours prior to your appointment time.
In some instances, we may request your permission to receive a copy of your cat’s health records and have a discussion with your veterinarian about your pet’s medical history. Depending on your situation, we may require your cat to have a veterinary examination prior to a consultation with us if we suspect that medical causes could be contributing to your pet’s behaviour.
Are Results Guaranteed?
The outcome of any training or behavior modification programme depends on a number of factors including your pet’s history, genetic makeup, environment, and the consistency with which our recommendations are followed. Because these factors our outside of our control, it is not possible or ethical to guarantee a particular result or outcome. We do guarantee however, the highest degree of professionalism and commitment to working with you and your pet to achieve the best possible results. Your success is important to us, so if you are unsure of any aspect of our advice or the treatment plan, please contact us right away.
If at any time we feel your needs exceed the level of service that we are able to provide, we will assist you in finding a suitable Veterinary Behaviourist.
Working with Vets
We value the relationship you have with your veterinarian. They play a crucial role in the long-term wellbeing of your pet. We prefer to work in partnership with your vet, and we welcome veterinary referrals.
